Española Farmers Market adjusts to the 2020 health guidelines!

We're hanging in. The masks are key, as well as different ways of handling the fruit and produce. The Española Farmers Market is still the place to go to get reasonably-priced merchandise that is locally grown with love!

We promised more recipes. Here they are:

Monday market rolls around again in Española, New Mexico! Mondays—June to October.

We're doing well, in spite of the challenges, at the Española Farmers Market. The harvest came in earlier than usual in 2020.

We couldn't have imagined the challenges of this growing season. Remembering the challenges helps us survive life's rollercoaster ride and how we have overcome the ups and downs.

Let's get more of our young people involved in growing and harvesting. The elders of this community deserve to know how much we appreciate the market and all the folks (many known and unknown) who have supported the our local market over the years.

Check our blog on a regular basis. Find out what's happening. We love you. We love our market.

We're thriving at the Española Farmers Market, even with the social distancing!

Considering everything during 2020, the Española Farmers Market is doing well!

Our faces are covered. We're patiently waiting for vendors to load our bags.

And at home, we're having our usual summer feasts of fresh fruit and produce, locally grown.

A refreshing drink from an enthusiastic writer for the Española Farmers Market—

Let’s Toast the Española Farmers Market!

Let's make a lovely Berry Baby Bellini, a berry-scented and fizzy alcohol-free cocktail. It's a family treat for summer. This is a colorful drink that’s both fun and memorable, the perfect concoction for a very special toast.

Berry Baby Bellini Recipe

Serves 5, time 5 minutes

Ingredients

·      1 cup assorted berries: blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, or similar fruit

·      2 tablespoons of sugar

·      1 bottle of sparkling apple cider, alcohol-free

·      5 flute stemmed glasses or tall glasses

Directions

1. Add half the berries and sugar into a small bowl or container. Combine with a spoon and muddle until you get a smooth puree.

2. Add two teaspoons of berry puree to each glass and fill halfway with sparkling apple cider. Stir gently.

3. Add a few whole berries to each glass, top with cider, and serve.

Our Española Farmers Market short film is being viewed around the world!

Who would have thought that our farmers market film would be viewed around the world? Earlier this year, Films for Change, a digital platform from Australia chose you and me and the folks of Northern New Mexico with our apples and squash and corn and onions and more to feature.

We were thrilled with the news last year about being chosen as the Best Farmers Market during the 2019 celebration at the New Mexico state capitol building during Food and Farms Day at the legislature.

Then we were delighted once more when New Mexico Press Women gave us a first-place award for our blog in 2019. We competed nationally for the National Federation of Press Women and received a third-place standing of entries across the US.

A plentiful supply of corn is expected soon. Many of the growers at the Española Farmers Market consider themselves part of the long tradition in Northern New Mexico of food production. Planting started in spring of this year and the results have been laid out for customers with masks and social distancing. Only the vendors are handling the food.

THE TOMATOES AREN'T IN YET, SO BE PATIENT!

Get ready for some mouth-drooling fresh corn on the cob this season!

All the fresh corn isn't in from the fields yet. "Soon." That's what we're saying. This is the time of year when you'll need to stock up on butter and salt and recipes for adding corn to squash dishes. This is a heads up to get ready in the kitchen for steaming and serving corn fresh to you.

And yes, this year —2020—the young people will be working with Dexter Trujillo on market Mondays
preparing special treats that many vendors and market customers get to taste (often).

We're open and offering fresh produce at the Española Farmers Market in 2020!

We've been opening slowly and getting used to the new guidelines associated with the health emergency.

And the farmers' market blog has also been slow in getting started. But hang onto your shopping bags because the produce is coming in from the fields and we're up and ready to provide the specials you have grown used to in the past.

Be here now on Mondays at the Española Farmers Market. See you then!

Get ready for the opening of the Española Farmers Market!

Folks from Northern New Mexico have been calling us on the phone. Will the market open? Can we get our favorite chiles to last through the cold weather? Yes. And there will be changes, as you probably expect because of the pandemic guidelines. Make sure you show up with a mask and observe the safety requirements of social distancing. You'll get the idea when you're here. And be patient. Much produce has been available earlier than usual. And the chiles will be here too, later this summer. It will be worth the wait for a big bowl of green chile stew!

2020 Española Farmers Market's Opening in June!

As of today, the news is that the Española Farmers Market will open as usual in early June.

The Espanola Farmers Market will open on Monday June 8, 2020 and be open every Monday through October 26, 2020 from 10 am to 4 pm.

There's snow in the mountains, the fruit trees are flowering in Espanola and farmers are out working in their fields.

Coronavirus is keeping the rest of us indoors for now, but hopefully warm weather and our precautions this spring will flatten the curve of this pandemic and we can all emerge for healthy food in the summer.

Be safe!
