Get ready for the big market contest and fun day!
Española Farmers Market will be hosting the Sixteenth Annual BIGGEST VEGETABLE & BEST POEM Contest on
Monday, October 12,. Growers active at the Market can enter their
impressive vegetables in the following categories: Biggest heirloom pumpkin,
Biggest root vegetable, Prettiest pumpkin, Biggest chile, Oddest vegetable,
Wild card vegetable. Students can also subimit poetry about farming or
gardening. Growers and students need to deliver all poems and vegetable contestants to the Market by 10 am on
October 12 Contest Day. Winners will be announced at 1:30 pm and
ribbons awarded.
All participants and winners will be included in
next season’s market postcard. Ask at the managers' table for past seasons’ "A
Farming Chapbook." The 2013/2014 "A Farming Chapbook" will be the last edition of "A Farming Chapbook."
October 12 is also a regular Market Monday. Enjoy
the traditional music of Don Bernardo
y Los Ultimos midday during every Monday market through October 26. The Market is located at 1005
North Railroad Avenue. Come meet old friends, visit with farmers, enjoy the
display of the big contest vegetables and shop for delicious fruits and vegetables
freshly-picked from the fields. Find fresh corn, onions, peas,
chile, horno-roasted chicos, fresh chard, salad greens and other treats. We
accept WIC, Senior WIC, DUFB, EBT (SNAP) and Debit as well as cash money.
Children will be able to select a book from the free Kids’ Book Exchange. You will also be able to find free bilingual recipe
cards at the market stalls that give ideas for how to prepare some of the produce. Make a collection. You can stroll in the wildflower garden or wander behind
the plaza to see what is growing in the community fields. Join with neighbors and friends at the Española Farmers
Market. Every market is a special
day!

Monday, October 12, 2015 is the sixteenth annual biggest vegetable and poem contest at the Española Farmers Market. Winners announced at 1:30 p.m. Bigest heirloom pumpkin. Prettiest pumpkin. Biggest root vegetable. Biggest chile. Oddest vegetable. Wild card outstanding vegetable. And best poem about farming. Sandra Cata of the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area is the vegetable judge. Deliver all poems and vegetables to the market by 10 a.m. on October 12, Contest Day.

Great chile tasting, contest and celebration!
Congratulations to the winners of our Heirloom Chile Contest. Luz and Jose Lopez of Nambe won double first prizes for their chile stew and raw chile tasting and contributions by Elias Gomez, Josie Gallegos, Jose Velasquez and Roy Campbell, all of Alcalde, won special mentions for the taste and flavors of their local chile varieties. This is our fourth year to honor local chile during our annual Labor Day Free Chile Roasting. Clarissa Duran has organized this event each year and we want to especially acknowledge her creative work and the support of Lauren Reichelt of Rio Arriba County Health Center in helping to support this program and also helping to fund the student participation in the Cooking Up Traditions program.

Market Quilt is on its way! Labor Day photos coming soon.
Raffle tickets will be available every Market Monday starting September 14 at $10 per ticket. The winner will be announced during the last day Market Potluck Monday on October 27. You do not have to present to win. Thanks to quilting bee participants Iren Schio, Joan Logghe, Sabra Moore, Norma Navarro and Baby Sophia who assembled to tie the quilt and shared cake and friendship. All proceeds benefit the operations and programs of Espanola

WORK IS UNDERWAY FOR MARKET QUILT
Visitors to the market will be able to view and purchase raffle tickets for the market quilt on September 14. The quilt will be handmade by 22 market participants and friends.The raffle will be held on October 27, Market Day Pot Luck day. Expect a photo of the finished quilt, plus names of all participants by September 13!

Labor Day celebration at the Española Farmers Market
We're off to the Labor Day Free Chile Roasting for every bushel of chile purchased at the Market plus the Heirloom Chile Cook-Off.
We're celebrating our 20th season as a market by reviewing highlights of the past and one way of doing this means sharing our market YouTube channel. So take a look at the market video from 2012 and then appreciate how far we've come.

Are we having fun? We're celebrating the 20th year for the market with remembering past years buying and selling fresh produce. And during 2015, save the date for the upcoming chile festival on Labor Day, Friday markets, the big veggie contest, plus our YouTube channel and Twitter feed.

All this fun was in 2014 at the Española Farmers Market in northern New Mexico. Maybe you're in these photos of highlights of the season. The chile festival is happening again on Labor Day in 2015. So, save the date! If you've been by the Espanola Farmers Market, the new ramada is in process in terms of construction. Corn and tomatoes are in. And if you miss Monday markets, stop by on Fridays from 2 to 7 p.m.
Produce is growing in the back garden with a mentoring project in conjunction with Tewa Women United. Ten young men from the community have been active over the summer, a project funded by the First Nation Foundation. Jon Naranjo is the lead coordinator of the program called the "Journey of Becoming a Man." There may be a few spaces left. Contact: jon@tewawomenunited.org

MARKET NEWS AND NEW VIDEOS WITH BLASTS FROM THE PAST!
GREAT NEWS from the Espanola Farmers Market. We've been successful in receiving $60,000 from the New Mexico Legislature to build a passive solar bathroom in the future with two stalls for compost toilets and gray water for watering. Improved parking behind the market is one important benefit. A grant from the NM Farmers Market Association will make the building of a 8x12' Ramada possible in the garden area next season.
We're in our 20th year. This means fun and celebration. Take a look at our new videos on this blog that feature blasts from the past!

It's the 2015 Espanola Farmers Market's June 15th opening!
The Española
Farmers Market opens on June 15, 2015 for its current
season and will continue hosting Monday Markets, 10 am-5 pm during every
Monday through October 26, 2015 at 1005 North Railroad Avenue. Come meet old
friends, visit with farmers, sample freshly-picked fruits and vegetables and
help us launch our twentieth market season. Don
Bernardo y los Ultimos will be serenading us at midday. You will find fresh
onions, peas, quelites, chile, horno-roasted chicos, fresh chard, salad greens,
berries, grass-fed lamb and other treats. We accept WIC, Senior WIC, EBT (SNAP)
and Debit as well as cash money. This season we will offering Double Up Food
Bucks (DUFB) for SNAP customers. Each time you swipe your SNAP card, you will
get an equal amount of bonus DUFB for purchasing fruits and vegetables.
Children
