October 9th is the Biggest Vegetable and Poem Contest for 2017!

Española Farmers Market will be hosting the 18th annual BIGGEST VEGETABLE & BEST POEM Contest on Indigenous Peoples Day, October 9, 2017. Market hours are 10 am to 5 pm. Growers active at the market can enter their impressive vegetables in the following categories: Biggest heirloom pumpkin, Biggest root vegetable, Biggest chile, Oddest vegetable, Wild card vegetable, Prettiest ristra, Best corn, Biggest sunflower head or dried gourd. Students or adults can also read poetry about farming or gardening.

This year—2018—is the 23rd year of the Española Farmers Market. We've been hosting the Biggest vegetable and poem contest for 18 years, and market blog for over a decade. Española has a secret for bringing people together. It's the farmers' market.

Growers and students should deliver all poems and vegetable contestants to the Market by 10 am on October 9^th contest day.  Winners will be announced at 1 pm and ribbons awarded. All participants and winners will be included in next season’s market postcard.

October 9^th is also a regular Market Monday. Enjoy the traditional music of Don Bernardo y Los Ultimos midday during every Monday market through October 30th The market is located at 1105 North Railroad Avenue in Española, NM. Come meet old friends, visit with farmers, enjoy the display of the big contest vegetables and shop for delicious fruits and vegetables freshly picked from the fields. Visitors can find fresh corn, onions, peas, chile, horno-roasted chicos, fresh chard, salad greens and other treats. We accept WIC, Senior WIC, DUFB, EBT (SNAP) and Debit as well as cash money.

Children can select a book from our free kids’ book exchange. You will also be able to find free bilingual recipe cards at the market stalls giving you ideas for how to prepare some of the tasty produce. You can stroll in our Wildflower Garden or wander behind the plaza to see what is growing in the Community Fields. Join your neighbors and friends at the Española Farmers Market.  Every Market is a special day!

Take your time at the market—so many goodies on the vendor tables!

Treat yourself, friends, and family members. Cook up a storm like at no other time during the year. And make sure you set aside time in October when the harvest is in. Do you have friends visiting from out of town? Take them to the market. Chat with the growers about how to cook with many special foods you can't get anywhere else. Start on Monday in the kitchen and continue serving fresh foods through the following weekend. We support our farmers' market. Locally-grown produce is fresher, cheaper, and healthy. It's what the people of Northern New Mexico have relied on over the more than two decades we have been in operation. And with the summer weekly markets, we have it all.

Ten years for the Española Farmers Market blog!

Ten years ago we started the blog for the Española Farmers Market. Back then, we were preparing to move to our present location. Find out more by enjoying a blast into the past on our blog.

What progress and fun over the last decade! And there's more to come to when the market closes for the season in late October 2017 this year.

Review of news: The Friday markets weren't held this year. The enthusiasm and participation was transferred to the Monday markets. And did you drop in to see the broader community festival that included the farmers' market over the Labor Day weekend. It was great!

On Labor Day the farmers' market was packed with vendors, shoppers, and people enjoying live music, a cooking project for the young people, a wool demonstration, free books for kids of all ages, heritage chile tasting, and much more. The bathrooms haven't opened yet. Did you see the goats?

Heirloom chile samples and free chile roasting on Labor Day!

September 4, 2017 is the Labor Day Free Chile Roasting and Heirloom Chile Cook-Off during regular Monday market hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Heirloom chile samples from local farmers with information about the source of the seeds.

An overview of the events and fun upcoming at the Espanola Farmers Market!

Join us on Monday, September 4^th for our Labor Day Free Chile Roasting & Heirloom Chile Cook-Off during regular Monday Market hours, 10am-5pm.

Customers can enjoy free chile roasting for a bushel of chile purchased at the Market and also shop as usual among the vendor stalls.

We will be displaying heirloom chile samples from various farmers with information about the source of the seeds, usually a grandparent or other relative.

At 1 pm, students who have participated in our summer Cooking-Up Traditions programs will help judge the various chile stews and other chile dishes that some farmers have prepared. After awarding the prizes, we invite our visitors to share in tasting the dishes.

We will also have two booths with information about sustainable agriculture innovations and about the long-time Garlic Festival and other agriculture-related programs of Northern New Mexico College. We will also be cooking in a solar oven and in the horno in the Wildflower Garden area and enjoying fiddle and accordion music.

This annual event is part of Alimento/ Towa eh Huu’tsong’yo- a collaborative three-day series of events starting on Friday evening, September 1^st with a dance performance and art opening at 6pm  at the Center for Arts, Northern New Mexico College, 921 Paseo de Onate. Market manager Sabra Moore will be displaying some of the Farm Story Banners with the stories of growers at the Espanola Farmers Market alongside a painted house-shaped sculpture. In addition to enjoying the performances  of Holy Faith Break Dancers, Coco Daca Dance Project and Mina Fajardo Flamenco, you can read some of the farmers’ stories and enjoy the paintings of Roger Montoya and the sculpture of Rozanne Swentzell. The evening is free.

 

On Saturday September 2^nd, there are two celebrations- the Regeneration Festival sponsored by Tewa Women United at Espanola Healing Foods Oasis near Valdez Park off Railroad Avenue is from 2-6pm. You can also stop by the Fifth Anniversary Celebration of the Espanola Community Market at 310 Paseo de Onate from 12-6pm.

The Española Farmers Market YouTube channel has captured a lot of the market fun over the years.

The bathroom construction is in progress and we appreciate people understanding how this has affected our parking. But how wonderful it will be to have actual working bathrooms soon! Friday markets haven't materialized for this season, although Monday Market is brim-full with 29 vendors last week and the very first chiles coming in! Corn will be here soon. The market opens at 10 am. The period of nine to ten is only for vendor set-up.

When you visit us early on Monday mornings, you'll get the pick of the crop for dinner during the week. We've waited all year for the summer market, and now it's here. Take advantage of it! We have all the same perks and benefits as during other season markets.

This year has special quirks with the planting and harvest. Slight variations in weather can make a huge difference. Visit us, and plan what's for dinner. And check our YouTube channel for images of past markets. We have music, we have free books for children, and special deals!

The Friday markets have been delayed for the 2017 season. We're feeling the effect of the climate change. Some produce is early and other produce is coming in later than we expected. Watch this blog or the Rio Grande Sun for an ad. And hopefully we'll have news for you by the end of July.

KEEP UP TO DATE: We have musicians at the market starting at 10 a.m. to about 1 p.m.

Books for young people are available every market day. One book per child, and there are some great ones available.

We had over 20 vendors last week. And it is looking as if melons are early.

Apples aren't in season yet for 2017, but this is a reminder that apple orchards are all over Northern New Mexico. It's not too early to be thinking of the pies and other special desserts that will have family members and friends asking for second helpings. Some vendors have apples available from last season that have survived the winter through special storage methods and tender loving care.

If you haven't had a chance to stop by the Española Farmers Market yet this season, put it on your Monday calendar. Go early and introduce yourself to the growers and farmers. Sometimes folks drop by too late in the day and their favorite produce is gone. Don't let this happen to you!

The joy of following food from seed to sack!

We're getting ready for the 2017 Española Farmers Market where you'll meet old friends and new friends of all ages. At no other place in town are people joining together over food and smiles like this. The take away is abundant. There's a great social life possible at the famers' market. Folks tap their toes to the live music while they're filling up sacks of fresh food. The vendors are smiling too. Why? It's an enormous accomplishment to follow the food from seed to sack.
